2023 Annual Regatta |
The annual Sunbreaker Cove Regatta was held August 4th to the 6th 2023. This year's Regatta was very well attended, and the weather was perfect all day and into the evening. I estimate there were 400 plus people in attendance for the morning land races, hot dog lunch and fireworks.
Friday evening there was a scavenger hunt that lasted to the end of the weekend. I ran into many people on the streets looking for mystery items, I was not sure where they were. A moose crossing sign, a little red truck, etc. Everyone was having fun and meeting with neighbors and friends looking for the items. Thank You to Kerri Golinowski for organizing this event
The Saturday morning started off at Glens Cove beach with a treasure hunt in the sand looking for tokens that could be exchanged for prizes.
Before the land races started a rousing course of Oh Canada was sung by all in attendance. This was a positive change and something I would have never thought of. The land races were well attended by all ages from newborn to us seniors. There is always some exciting revelry between the regular attendees.
There were so many people in attendance that most of the land races had to be run in several heats to accommodate everyone and keep it safe. The land races included a straight run for the fastest, a potato sack race, the three-legged race and of course the family relay. The land races were followed by a Hot Dog lunch served with water, chips, cookies, and condiments. Joe Morrison said they severed 430 Hot Dogs, wow that is a great turn out.
Thank You to all the following volunteers for making this wonderful annual event an enormous success - Joe Morrison and Kerri Golinowski were the main organizers;
Kyle and Curtis Kimball for donating the Awesome BBQ for cooking;
Heath Sande and Carling Hack for judging races and helping set up the BBQ lunch;
Simon and Erin Jean for judging races and helping set up the BBQ lunch;
Emily and Brett Debert judging races and helping set up the BBQ lunch;
Justin and Nadine Gritten for helping setup and judging races.
Another new addition to this year's Regatta was Live Music by Randi Boulton performed from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. Many thanks to Patty Ganske and Adele Poratto for organizing this event. It was well attended, and I heard many positive comments. The evening was wrapped up by the annual Fireworks display set up and set off by the Schmaltz and Smejkal families. Thanks to Dave Smejkal and Rose Schmaltz for firing up the skies with a spectacular fireworks display. It was very exciting that we had several families step forward to run the 2024 Regatta. Thank You to James Wickson, Kelsey Finch, and Pattie Ganske for stepping forward for next year’s event. It really makes a difference not having to hold the crowd that have come to watch the fireworks in the awkward position of waiting until someone steps forward to organize the Regatta before the show can begin.
Also, a Big Thank You to Glen & Gwyn Gauley and Pattie Ganske for cleaning up the fireworks residue the following morning following the Fireworks. It’s always important to remember that without the Summer Village’s support this event would not happen. Thank You to the Summer Village for all the support.
