The RCMP encourages you to download the the Alberta RCMP app. It's a simplified online experience to report crime, contact a detachment or to simply learn about crime rates in your area. Please view the pamphlet here.
There is also the "CAPTURE" program. This program allows residents with cameras on their homes to register with the RCMP. If a crime takes place or is reported in your area, the RCMP would then reach out to you and ask permission for you to give them any video footage you may have. This creates a potential network of security footage that can be very helpful. As they mentioned in our meeting, in today's world it is becoming more and more true that "if it isn't on video, it didn't happen". Find more information and sign up here: https://crimecapture.ca/
Another program available to residents is SCAN (Safer Communities and Neighborhoods).
If a property is being used for illegal activity you may notice some common signs. Seeing one of these signs doesn’t always mean illegal activity is going on, but if they happen often or together, a problem may exist.
Some common signs of illegal activity include:
- frequent visitors at all times of the day and night
- frequent late night activity
- extensive home security
- residents that are rarely seen, distant or secretive
- windows blackened or curtains always drawn
- neglected property and yard
- people repeatedly visiting the property who only go to the door for a short time
- residents who regularly meet vehicles near the property for a short time
- strange odours coming from the house or garbage
- garbage that contains numerous bottles and containers, particularly chemical containers
- putting garbage in a neighbour's collection area
Finally, if you have a non emergency complaint for the RCMP, you can call them at 403-887-3333

Recently the Summer Villages sat down with the RCMP to discuss service in our area. The RCMP confirmed that last year they had 8 vacancies which have now been filled, and they have a new system with 5 constables, each assigned to one Summer Village. This means that each community will be visited by the RCMP at least once a day (unless responding to another emergency), at random hours. They will be seeking to have meaningful engagement with members of our community as often as possible. They are also looking to increase stops and drinking & driving checks in the area.
During this discussion we also discussed the Crime C.A.P.T.U.R.E. program, which we have linked below. This is a program that can give the RCMP a greater video surveillance area using security cameras on private property. Residents can sign up and give the location of any private cameras they have. The RCMP will not have access to the private cameras, but they will use the locations given to create a map. This way, if a crime happens in a certain area, the RCMP can contact any member within that area and request footage during a certain time. It is then up to the private camera owner to submit the footage or not. Please see more information below and consider signing up for this program.
